Description

The pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) is a remarkable North American ungulate, often mistaken for true antelope but belonging to a unique evolutionary lineage. Native to the open plains and deserts of the western United States and parts of Canada and Mexico, pronghorns are famous for their extraordinary speed—second only to the cheetah.

Pronghorns are the only surviving members of their family and possess forked horns that are shed and regrown annually. Their excellent eyesight and speed make them highly adapted to open habitats where predators are visible from long distances.

  • Native to North American grasslands and deserts
  • Scientific classification: Antilocapra americana
  • Known for reaching speeds up to 55 mph
  • Shed and regrow horns annually
