Description

The roan antelope (Hippotragus equinus) is one of Africa’s largest antelope species, easily recognized by its reddish-gray coat, long ears, and striking black-and-white facial pattern. These antelopes inhabit the savannas and open woodlands of sub-Saharan Africa, where they graze on tall grasses and form small herds. Despite their size, roans are known for their agility and strength, often defending themselves fiercely against predators such as lions. They are listed as a species of least concern but face ongoing threats from habitat loss and competition with livestock.
