Description

The pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) is a unique North American mammal known for its remarkable speed and endurance. Often mistakenly called an antelope, it belongs to its own family, Antilocapridae, and is the only surviving member of that group. Adapted to life on vast open plains, the pronghorn can reach running speeds of up to 55 mph—second only to the cheetah in land speed.

Its distinctive backward-curving horns, large eyes, and tan coloration help it detect predators and thrive in arid environments. The species plays an important ecological role and is one of the most iconic game animals in the western United States.

  • The only living member of the Antilocapridae family
  • Among the fastest land animals in North America
  • Inhabit open prairies, deserts, and shrublands
  • Excellent vision adapted for predator detection
  • Valuable symbol in North American wildlife history
