Description

The pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) is an iconic species of North America, found in open grasslands and deserts across the western United States. Though often referred to as an antelope, it is the only surviving member of its own family—Antilocapridae—and unrelated to true antelope species in Africa and Asia.

Pronghorns are famous for being the second-fastest land mammals in the world, capable of sustaining speeds up to 55 mph over long distances. Their large eyes provide wide-angle vision ideal for spotting predators in open landscapes. One of their most unique features is their horns, which are made of a keratin sheath over a bony core and are shed and regrown annually—a rare trait among horned animals.

  • Native to the North American plains and deserts
  • Exceptional speed
  • Horns are shed and regrown annually
  • Recognized for excellent vision and endurance
