Description
The pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) is the fastest land mammal in North America, capable of reaching speeds up to 55 mph. Though often compared to antelopes, pronghorns are a unique species native to the open plains, deserts, and grasslands of the western United States and parts of Canada and Mexico.
Notably, pronghorns are the only surviving members of the Antilocapridae family. They have exceptional vision, a large heart-to-body size ratio for endurance, and distinctive forked horns that shed annually—a rare trait among horned mammals.
