Description

CARIBOU- Caribou, also called reindeer, is found in northern regions of North America, Europe, Asia, and Greenland. In North America caribou vary in size from the smallest, the Peary caribou, to the largest, the boreal woodland caribou. Male caribou use their antlers to compete with other males during the mating season. In most caribou subspecies, both males and females sexes grow antlers—unique among cervid species. The velvet that covers growing antlers is a highly vascularized skin. When the antler growth is fully grown and hardened, the velvet is shed or rubbed off. After the mating season, the male caribou shed his antlers, growing a new pair the next summer with a larger rack than the previous year. During the mating season Caribou may travel more than 600 miles.
